Age-appropriate classes and hands-on exploration!

Our preschool programs incorporate the core philosophy that regards each child as a natural learner. The St. James Preschool curriculum is child-directed and stresses learning through play with a hands-on, discovery approach. Our curriculum evolves and is flexible enough to respond to the interests of the children while still ensuring that all basic skill areas are covered. St. James’ teachers encourage children to develop independence, self-help and problem-solving skills. Teachers also place particular emphasis on celebrating each child’s uniqueness and developing a positive self-image.

St. James Preschool offers the following programs:

Multi-Age Program – Ages 2 ½ – 4 years
9 AM – 1 PM • Choice of 3, 4 or 5 days

Recognizing that the transition from home to school can be difficult for some, this unique program strikes the perfect balance of directed activities and free play for the first time preschooler. A broad range of ages within the classroom encourages leadership skills in older children and provides positive peer modeling for younger ones while fostering a familial atmosphere. There are 30 children maximum per day with 3 certified teachers and 2 assistant teachers. The low teacher to student ratio gives the teachers the opportunity to assess each child’s developmental needs—quietly encouraging each child to move to their next level of development without putting pressure on children to do things they are not ready to do.

Young Fours – Ages 4 and 5
9 AM – 1:30 PM • Choice of 4 or 5 days

Similar in curriculum to the full day Pre-K, the Young Fours program is designed to serve the needs of children not yet ready for a full-day program, but capable of engaging in more teacher-directed activities. The curriculum prepares children for either a Pre-K or Kindergarten option the following year. The Young Fours program is available to children who will turn 4 between April 1 and December 1. The class size is limited to a maximum of 13 students, with one certified teacher and an assistant teacher.

Full Day Pre-K – Ages 4 and 5
9 AM – 3 PM • Choice of 4 or 5 days

With a stimulating, thematic approach to learning, the Pre-K program addresses the developmental abilities of the 4 and 5 year-olds in a variety of ways. Teachers present concepts in math, science, social studies, writing, pre-reading, music and movement through hands-on experiences and teacher-directed activities. Large and small motor skill development is incorporated into the child-centered curriculum. Our convenient Upper Montclair location enables us to create a special focus on community through various walking trips. Children must be 4 prior to October 1 and plan to attend Kindergarten the following year. Two classes are available, with a maximum class size of 13. There is one certified teacher and an assistant teacher in each class.

Summer Camp

Similar to our Multi-Age program, the St. James Summer Camp runs for six weeks (closed during the 4th of July week) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. However, you may enroll your child in any combination of the six weeks. Current students of St. James Preschool receive priority enrollment, but the program is open to all children. Children spend time on the playground enjoying water play activities and indoors participating in the many learning stations available. During summer camp, there is both snack time as well as lunch. The summer camp is staffed by four teachers from the St. James Preschool and four assistant counselors. Enrollment is limited to a maximum of 30 children per day.
